#11: Destination Weddings FAQ

So as I'm pouring over hundreds of wedding sites, one thing that has really been catching my high-maintenance-eye is DESTINATION weddings! By no means are these my top 10, just ones I've pulled together. Here goes!

  1. How much in advance do I need to book the wedding?
    "8-14months"
-Not only do you have to see if there's availability at the hotel, you also have to worry about transportation, time off for the bridal party, etc. Nobody wants a months notice for what's probably going to be a hefty chunk out of their vacation days!
  2. What’s included in my all-inclusive travel package? "Food, drinks, accommodation and transfers."
-Make it simple--these people are giving up a lot to be part of your big day, don't make them work over time to figure it out!
  3. When should I send the invitations to my guests?
    "Always asap"
-Again with the time off, the earlier the better. Maybe even "Save-the-Date" cards?
  4. What happens when I get to my destination?
"A representative from the tour operator will be waiting at the airport to escort you to your transfer where you will be taken to the resort"
-Ask for this ahead of time, nobody wants to be stranded at the airport! :)
  5. How many wedding guests do I need for my wedding?
"Usually, minimum of 10 wedding guests are required to receive a group rate for a destination wedding."
-And really, who wants to have anything smaller then that on your big day anyway!?
  6. What happens if I have guests coming from out of the province or country?
"Most places can make the necessary travel arrangements for all of your guests so they arrive at your wedding destination and on time."
-When you're footing the bill, most companies are more then happy to roll out the red carpet for you!
  7. What documents do I need to be legally married?
"This varies by destination. It is best to consult your planner for specific details."
-This is most often overlooked and HELLO people, you want to make your marriage legit--make it legal! Plan ahead!
  8. Do I have options for where the wedding ceremony takes place?
"Options for your ceremony may include: a sunrise beach ceremony, gazebo ceremony, garden ceremony, banquet room and evening ceremonies. There may be more choices available to you depending on the hotel you choose – ask your destination wedding specialist!"
-Once again, it's your big day, dream big!
  9. Is there a special wedding dinner?
"Yes, but you need to reserve the menu and your preferred restaurant with the hotel prior to arriving at the destination. Options will vary by resort and private event fees may be applicable."
-Always make sure that you or your planner are on the same page for food--it is an easy trap for last-minute mess ups!
  10. Will there be a hair stylist and make-up artist available?
"Yes, a hair stylist and make-up artist will be available and can be requested upon booking. Charges may apply and services vary by resort."
    -Got to look your best!
